The textile design of COOVA

Fabric that has long been used in various regions shares a common comfortable quality. COOVA draws inspiration from that and re-imagines this fabric in our aim to create a new fabric that can continue to evolve with the people who use it.

We hope to create a fabric that is just like music in the sense that one may feel lost without it, but in its presence, the user's life will be greatly enriched. We would like to offer fabric that allows for every single person using it to freely discover his or her own unique story within it.

The textile design of COOVA entails 3 major elements:
・Material selection (yarn with the right texture, thickness, and colors that are perfect for what we have in mind)
・Weaving method (the density of individual threads, the spun design of the warp threads, the positions where weft threads are inserted, etc.)
・Production method (production area and workshop, schedule, and volume)
The actual process involves going back and forth between these steps to achieve products of the best quality. We use Excel spreadsheets in our design phase.

As textile production revolves around rational elements, many arithmetic calculations are involved in thinking about fabric. These arithmetics are easily handled using an Excel spreadsheet. However, another reason why COOVA uses Excel in its design phase is because we would like to share the entirety of what we have in mind with the people who are involved in its production. We feel that in doing this, a transparent production process can be achieved. This is also the reason why we feel that it is possible to achieve a means of production for COOVA that is a combination of individual artisanship and mass production on an industrial scale.

We hope that COOVA can play a crucial role in bringing together the rational world of arithmetics and the organic world of feelings and emotions. The people involved in production will begin their work based on the designs we have created in Excel. These are the very people who twist the yarn, dye the fabric, use the weaving machines, and everyone else who has a hand in the process. This is the authentic site from which fabric that offers users a wonderful sensory experience begins to take shape organically. The final product created through this process will make its way to many people, and through repeated use, it will finally evolve from simply being a piece of "cloth" to become a "fabric" that will always live alongside them.
